Sifted Like Wheat

Tuesday, November 10, 2026 · Day 10

Biblical Focus: Peter

Luke 22:31–32 (NLT)

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Jesus told Peter about his coming failure before it happened. Peter would deny Him three times. Yet notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say, “I prayed that you would not fall.” He prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail. And He spoke about the other side: “when you have repented and turned to me again.”

Jesus knew the sifting would come. He allowed it. Why? Because Peter’s greatest weakness was his self-confidence. “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you” (v. 33). Peter believed in Peter. The sifting shook out the chaff of self-reliance and left the wheat.

The Peter who preached at Pentecost was not the same man who boasted at the Last Supper. The difference was not that he had tried harder. The difference was that he had failed completely, wept bitterly, and been restored by grace (John 21). Failure humbled him into usefulness.

This is deeply challenging. Some of your greatest transformation may come through your worst failure. Not because failure is good, but because God refuses to waste it. And your failure, once redeemed, becomes your ministry: “strengthen your brothers.”

If you are walking in shame over a recent failure, hear this: Jesus prayed for you before you fell. He is waiting for you to turn again.

The Practice of Transformation

Read John 21:15–19. Notice Jesus asks Peter three times, one for each denial. Bring your own failure to Him by name, receive His restoration, and ask Him whom you might strengthen through it.

✦ Reflection ✦

What confidence in yourself might God need to sift out?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for praying for me before I fell. I turn back to You. Use even my failure to strengthen others. Amen.

God shakes out the chaff and keeps the wheat.
