Trouble That Produces Character

Saturday, November 21, 2026 · Day 21

Biblical Focus: Suffering That Shapes

Romans 5:3–4 (NLT)

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

How do you respond when life goes wrong? That may be the most honest test of all.

Paul describes a chain: trials produce endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Each link depends on the one before it. You cannot get to Christlike character without passing through endurance. And you cannot develop endurance without trials to endure.

This means that the trials you are begging God to remove may be the very means He is using to transform you. That does not make them easy. But it makes them meaningful.

The untransformed heart responds to suffering with complaint, self-pity, bitterness, or blame. Why me? It's not fair. Where is God? Those questions are honest, and God is not offended by them. The Psalms are full of them. But the transformed heart learns to ask a further question: Lord, what are You forming in me through this?

Paul says we can rejoice in trials. Not because pain is good, but because we know what it is producing. This is not a fake smile over a broken heart. It is a deep confidence that God is wasting nothing.

In July we were crushed into wholeness. In June we died to self. All of it was building to this: a person whose character has been shaped in the fire, and who comes out with greater hope, not less.

The Practice of Transformation

Write down your current trial. Under it, write three words: Endurance, Character, Hope. Beside each, write what God might be building in you through this trial. Pray over the list.

✦ Reflection ✦

Has suffering this year made you more bitter or more hopeful?

Prayer: Lord, I don't enjoy this trial, but I trust You in it. Build endurance, character, and hope in me. Waste nothing. Amen.

God wastes nothing, not even your pain.
